Meet the “fragrance loophole”
Many brands including highly reputable international brands are notorious for using fragrances in their products. In fact, it will be difficult to find a product without the word 'fragrance' in it. This is known as the fragrance loophole where companies are legally allowed to hide from almost 4,000 different chemicals in their products under the simple umbrella term of “fragrance,” “parfum,” or “eau de toilette.” This is because fragrance formulations are protected as “trade secrets” under the ‘fair package & labelling act of 1966’. Unfortunately, this also gives brands an opportunity to add cheap and sometimes toxic chemical cocktails to their products in order to make a scent stronger or last longer & then sell this to us, their unassuming customers.
As per a report published by the environmental working group, the average ‘fragrance’ contains about 14 secret artificial chemicals that are omitted from the label, many of which are linked to hormone disruption & allergic reactions. These toxic fragrance cocktails are present in our candles, perfumes, diffusers & beauty products. That scares me!
